Belt started in the No. 3 spot in the lineup and went 2-for-5 with a double, two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored in the Blue Jays’ 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, on Monday (July 21).
Belt hit a two-run double in the top of the second inning and a back-to-back home run with Bo Bissett in the top of the fourth. Belt’s 12th and 13th of the season.
Toronto combined Belt’s two home runs with homers from Kevin Kiermaier (two in the second), Bissett (one in the fourth) and George Springer (two in the fourth) to defeat Cincinnati 10-3. With the win, Toronto improved to 69-56 on the season after taking two of three from Cincinnati.
Starting pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin received strong support from the offense, going five innings with four hits, one walk, seven strikeouts and two runs (unearned) to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Unlike Toronto’s lengthy offense earlier in the game, Cincinnati’s offense was shut down very quickly by Ryu’s aggressive pitching. The most pitches Ryu threw in an inning on the day was 23 in the fifth inning.
“He knows how to pitch,” Belt said after the game, “It doesn’t matter what weapons he has on the mound. He knows what to do with it,” said Belt, who praised Ryu for his strong performance.
“He pitches pretty fast, and it’s always fun for (hitters) to play behind a pitcher who pitches at a high tempo.”
Toronto manager John Schneider also applauded Ryu. “He pitched really well,” Schneider said, “He knew they were going to be aggressive and he capitalized on that, and he did a good job.”
