CLE Rookie of the Year 12K in 59 Years…Williams’ ‘Monster Pitch’ Against Hyun-Jin Ryu
Gavin Williams (24, Cleveland Cavaliers), who was matched up with Hyun-jin Ryu (36, Toronto Blue Jays) in the starting lineup, turned in a terrifying pitching performance.
Williams pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out 12 and walking none in a home game against Toronto at Progressive Field in Ohio on Monday (Aug. 8). According to Yahoo Sports, the 12 strikeouts were the most by a Cleveland rookie in a game in 59 years, since Luis Tiant struck out 12 on Aug. 19, 1964. The Cuban native is a Major League Baseball (MLB) “legend” with 229 career wins. Williams also became the first player in franchise history to give up one run or fewer while striking out 12.
According to MLB stats site BaseballSabermetrics, Williams threw a total of 90 pitches on the day. He mixed a four-seam fastball (52) with a slider (20), curve (12), and changeup (5). His fastball sat at a high of 97.9 mph (157.6 km/h) and averaged 96 mph (154.5 km/h). He had a 43% (17 of 40) fastball swing rate.
The 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, Williams signed a $2.25 million signing bonus. He was rated as the 20th-best prospect in MLB in Baseball America’s (BA) preseason 2023 prospect rankings. He made his big league debut on June 22 against the Oakland Athletics and has been cruising. He is 1-3 with a 2.90 ERA on the season.토토사이트
Coincidentally, Williams didn’t get the win against Toronto. Cleveland scored two runs in the top of the eighth and one in the top of the ninth when the bullpen was activated in a 1-3 loss. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Bo Naylor’s single to right with runners on first and second pulled them within one, but that was it. On the ensuing 1-3 count, Steven Kwan was stranded at second base on a fielder’s choice.
Meanwhile, Ryu Hyun-jin, who started the game, was removed from the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after being hit in the knee by a wild pitch from Oscar Gonzalez. It was reported to be a simple bruise, and his stat line for the game was four innings of one-hit ball with one walk and two strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA significantly from 7.20 to 4.00.
